This line is significant in building Junior's character because it shows how even though he wanted to give up he ignored his pain and exhaustion to accomplish a greater goal. The fragment builds on the idea that Junior does not give up, ever. When he was born Junior was born with water in his brain. He was supposed to die or at the least be retarded. Instead he fought, he fought all the facts and became a smart ambitious athlete. The Indian crowd rejected him when he entered the basketball court. He disregarded the threats and played the game he loved, the game that used to be uncharted waters. Waters that he had conquered despite unfathomable adversities.
