Roger's Fight

Shermanʻs Work of Art

"Hey punk why did you hit Junior?" I yelled at the Indian kid who had elbowed Junior in the head.
The paramedics had just taken Junior of the court and I wanted answers. The coach ran up to me and told me to let it go. I shrugged him off and walked over to the kid that had hit Junior.
"My names Rowdy and it aint none of you're business." Rowdy said
"It became my business when you walked onto this court punk!" I walked up to him and he shoved me back.
"You don't even know the kid! Richdan boy!" Rowdy teased.
"He's my friend and my team mate Chief!" I retorted. I laughed in my head after saying this because I remembered a little while ago teasing junior by calling him chief.
Catcalls started ringing out from the crowd. I threw the first punch a jab to his left side he fell for the bait. I pulled back with my left while he dodged the fake and brought up my right fist into his chin. Both teams ran forward onto the court and a brawl broke out. I couldn't see anything as my adrenaline started to die blurring my vision. Rowdy was getting up when I was pulled out of the crowd by the ref. The ref blew his whistle a million times and slowly the brawl broke up. No one seemed to be seriously injured but there was blood and bruises everywhere.
"No more play for you," the ref scolded me.
I was out for the game while Rowdy still got play. I watched everyone else play from the sidelines; building up hatred for the Wellipinit team. My stomach felt like it was rolling around on a ship in a stormy sea. Now I felt like Junior did when he was nervous. I started to cry as the other team took ours apart scoring basket after basket. The worst part was that I could do nothing about it. The blood in my veins ran cold and I swore to myself that we would kill them next time.
I wrote this chapter that is missing from the book because I wanted to show how Roger wanted to protect his new friend Junior. Naturally Roger is not a violent person but he loves Junior and feels responsible for his safety like an older brother. Sherman Alexie makes it evident in the book that Roger is extremely kind, especially to Junior. This is proven when Roger offers to give Junior rides to his house and also lends him forty dollars. Sherman never talked about what happened after junior left the stadium with the paramedics except that Reardan lost. I thought it would be interesting to fill that missing chapter in and create an opportunity where Roger would enter a violent situation that is alien to him. In my story Roger stood up for his theoretical little brother Junior. Roger's family is never mentioned so I assumed that he is an only child. As an only child Roger is lonely and empty. Roger fills his emptiness by taking people under his wing and helping them. In the beginning of the book Roger finds Junior an enemy because he is mysterious and Roger does not understand him. After Junior proves himself to Roger by physically confronting him, Roger becomes curious to learn about him. Throughout the basketball offseason Roger builds a bank of information on Junior. Soon Roger discovers that Junior plays basketball. He uses his connection to Junior through basketball and Penelope in order to understand him. Through his research Roger comes to love Junior as a brother and helps him as much as possible. Sherman Alexie kept Roger as a companion for Junior through some of Junior's toughest times because he wanted to show how even your enemies can be your friends if you forgive them. By creating a chapter in which Roger fights for Junior I take their relationship a step further. It is important to take their relationship further because it shows that everyone despite differentiation in race can come to love one another not only as friends but as family.
